Does Nail Polish Expire?
Nail polish doesn't rot, but it thickens and separates over time. Here's how long it really lasts and how to tell when to toss it.

It doesn't spoil — it thickens
Nail polish has no water and few nutrients for bacteria, so it doesn't 'go bad' like makeup. Instead the solvents evaporate, the formula thickens, and the pigment separates.
Opened polish typically stays usable for 1–2 years; unopened, well-stored bottles can last much longer.
Signs it's past it
- It's stringy, gloopy or won't level out on the nail.
- The colour and pigment have separated and won't remix by rolling the bottle.
- It smells strongly of chemicals or dries oddly.
Thinner can revive a slightly thick polish, but not a fully separated one — never use acetone for this.
Store it right
Keep bottles upright, tightly capped, and away from heat and sunlight. Wipe the neck so the cap seals — a loose cap is what dries polish out early.
FAQ
Is expired nail polish harmful?
Not really — the worst case is a lumpy, streaky manicure. It's a quality issue, not a safety one.
